Fresh breeze for electromobility

Only recently, FGB’s small wind power station started rotating. After an approval- and planning phase it now has been successfully erected and put into operation. The system will soon, in the very best sense of electromobility, be generating a purely renewable energy, that is to be used for the operation of two electric vehicles. Thereby the core of the wind power system will be replaced by a from FGB completely redeveloped generator with higher efficiency.

The small wind turbine is part of a research project, which the company carries out within the framework of the modell city electromobility Bad Neustadt on its own initiative.  By the end of 2012, the company was the first in Bavaria to receive the granting decision from the Bavarian economics ministry for its innovative project. Since then, the special purpose manufacturer located in Salz has been working very hard on the realization. Here, its initially necessary to store the electricity produced by the wind power station in an energy buffer, in order to have, independently of the wind volume and demand for electricity, sufficient renewable energy available all the time for loading the vehicles.  With the help of the fleet test the midsized company will finally be testing, whether the implemented charging infrastructure for agricultural and business enterprises on the outskirts of villages may have an economic future.

For many years now, the company has been producing special purpose machines as well as torque motors and linear drives. With the project FGB would like to transform the existing competences in the field of generator manufacturing into reality and at the same time to boost the overall efficiency of the wind power station. “For us, the main focus of the project is definitely on the scientific evidences rather than on the economical operation of the system” the authorized representatives, Michael and Thorsten Steinbach, point out. “This is because we will have to shut down the system frequently to conduct our analysis and optimization activities. More over there have been made compromises in the site selection as well. Most notably, the nature conservancy stipulations (night disconnection) and the good accessibility of the system for required improvement measures were important points and therefore had to be considered.”

In advance, the wind conditions at the location had been measured and reported over an extended period of time. Out of this the purchase decision was on a weakwind turbine, which is suitable for the relatively limited windregime at the site. “We are already very curious about the research results”, the representatives go on. “Above all we are glad, that we as an innovative company are now able to supply our two electrical vehicles ecologically exemplary with purely renewable energy.”

The research project fits in seamlessly into the, for many years now, maintained close ties between FGB, universities and institutions and the related development activities. The company from Salz, that is part of the Steinbach-Group, develops and produces with its 160 employees individual machine solutions for customers worldwide.
